The Altona Pier rebuild was completed in January 2024. The historic Altona Pier was treated to an $11.9 million makeover, transforming into a huge walkway that stretches more than 300 metres out to sea. The new pier has a modern design with a Y-shape that creates two end platforms for viewing pleasure. The original pier was built in the 1800s, but after a series of damage repairs due to bad storms and ageing in the harsh maritime conditions, it was time for a replacement.
After eight months of construction, Hobsons Bay now has a flash new addition, with the original wood from the old pier recycled to make seating on the new one and also public art. It’s a nice touch that means the history and heritage can live on. The lighting on the hand rails uses LED lights to create a safe and visible walkway for everyone to enjoy all year round.
